Privacy

What Copper stores, in two parts: the visitors of sites that use Copper, and the people who sign in to the dashboard.

Visitors of sites that use Copper

When a page with the Copper script loads, the browser sends the page's address, the referring address and the window width. Our server sees the IP address and user agent that come with any web request.

From that, Copper keeps only counts:

  • the page path, without its query string
  • the referring site's domain, not the full address
  • the country, taken from the IP address by our network provider
  • the device type, browser name and operating system name
  • a utm_source tag, if the address has one

To count unique visitors, Copper computes a hash of a random daily value, the site, the IP address and the user agent. The random value is replaced every day at midnight UTC and is never written to our database, so the hash cannot be turned back into an IP address and cannot link one day's visit to another's.

The IP address, the user agent and the full page address are discarded after that step. Copper sets no cookie and writes nothing to the browser's storage.

Individual pageviews, already stripped as described, are held for about a day at the network edge so they can be counted, then deleted. What reaches the database is totals per hour and per day, and the 50 most common values of each item above per day.

People who sign in

Signing in with GitHub or Google gives Copper your name, email address and profile picture. Copper stores them with your account, along with the projects you create. A cookie keeps you signed in.

Who else handles the data

  • Cloudflare receives pageviews and counts them.
  • Neon hosts the database of totals and accounts.
  • Vercel hosts the dashboard and this site.

Copper does not sell data and shows no ads.

Retention

Hourly totals are kept for 14 days, daily breakdowns for 90 days, monthly breakdowns for 25 months and daily totals until the project is deleted. Deleting a project deletes all of its numbers. To delete your account, write to hello@copperanalytics.com.

Opting out as a visitor

On any site that uses Copper, run localStorage.setItem('copper_ignore', '1') in the browser console. That browser is no longer counted on that site.
